Bill C-34 - the Safe Social Media Act

We’re aware of how social media can affect young people.

We’re also aware the internet has created incredible opportunities to learn, connect, and communicate; however, it has also exposed children to harmful content, cyberbullying, online predators, and other serious risks.

I share those concerns. This is why I support efforts to better protect children online.

The Liberal government has introduced Bill-C-34: The Safe Social Media Act. If passed, the bill would create new rules for social media platforms and other online services, including age-verification requirements intended to limit young people's access to harmful content.

Protecting children online is a goal I fully support. The question is whether Bill C-34 will actually make children safer.

After more than a decade in government and years of delays, the Liberals are now on their third attempt at online harms legislation.

Before Parliament passes this bill, I want to know whether it will deliver real results for  families. I also want to hear what parents think about measures, such as age restrictions on social media and stronger protections against harmful content online.

I want to hear directly from parents and residents across Dufferin—Caledon before taking a final position on Bill C-34.

1. How concerned are you about the impact of social media on children and teenagers?
3. Do you support stronger age-verification measures to prevent minors from accessing pornography and other adult content online?
5. Bill C-34 would create a new Digital Safety Commission with the power to investigate complaints, issue orders, & enforce penalties. Do you support this approach?
2. Do you support restricting access to social media for children under the age of 16?
4. Do you believe social media companies are doing enough to protect children from harmful content?
6. Many of the details of Bill C-34 would be determined later through regulations and guidelines rather than being written directly into the legislation. Does this concern you?
7. Which concern is most important to you when it comes to online safety?
8. Based on what you know today, do you support Bill C-34?
9. Overall, how would you rate my performance as your Member of Parliament?
